Bob is right in the fact that Anderson does need to find consistency, but even Jimmy has stated that, he knows it and is working on it, it doesn't seem to be a thing a bowler like he can just click his fingers and find, but whilst he is doing that he is and will always be a threat. Personally I have always felt Jimmy deserves a place, I want him to do well, and I want him to have all the time to get his consistency sorted out because he is one of the best bowlers in the world when he gets it right But with the team as it is with just 3 seamers, I would leave Anderson out if we could get Simon Jones or Flintoff in for the SA games, I would probably choose Jones at the moment, he has been out and has shown great character to do so well coming back into cricket, Flintoff did about average on his return, Jones deserves the nod over Freddie.

i think Jimmy should be playing... yes he has had many chances but injury always seems stop a long run in the side. The batsmen all get a fair go so I hope Jimmy gets a long run in the team. Bob metiond about Panesar only being 26 and has time to improve. Jimmy is only 25(nearly 26) ...... also Hoggard, Harmison and Freddie didn't start firing for England until they were a similar age so i think he deserves his chance to play. Like bob says there's no need for Hoggard and Siddebottom in the team and even Hoggard would agree Ryan is playing outstanding. Hoggard has been unlucky, agreed but look at the Australians they're always ruthless with selections whether this one is right time will tell but u have to look to the future of team.

Anderson not an international class bowler? I must of imagined the wickets of Tendulker, Dravid, Ganguly and MS Dhoni all in one innings last year.

Anderson exposed in the Ashes? I'd love to see anyone else bowl out Australia without bowling a ball because of injury all summer, also having to change is action in the process. He should never have played in that series. I accept Hoggy should be the preffered option but lets not criticise him too much, if Anderson could get Sidebottoms consistensy, he would be a world beater. And lets not forget he is only 26 please, round about the age Glenn Mcgrath started bowling out teams.

I totally agree with Bob Wills that its pay back time for James Anderson, Everybody knows how talented James Anderson is but the problem with him is that he wants to do so many things in one over what he have to learn is to be bit more patient and should have A, B & C plans to get the batsman out or not let him score freely by bowling good line or length. James Anderson have the ability to swing the new ball with pace the things he should work on is control and secondly which is most important is the mental strength at times he lose his concentration. If he wants to be successfull at this level on consistent basis he has to delvelop a habit to think about the game on the feet because it was your mental strength which will help you during the tough times. Another thing he work on is swing the old ball specially reverse and the best place is to do that is work hard in the nets.

Paul Board - Hoggard should be in on form....Anderson took nine wickets in his last match, not too shabby. Marcus Easton - a focus on batting and lack of bowling....I have to disagree with you there. While I admit - as anyone would have to - the advent of Twenty20 cricket and the increasing amount of limited overs cricket certainly makes life tough for bowlers, I think we're possibly in the best state we have been for years in the seam bowling department. Spinners, yes, it's a worry there's no-one pushing Monty harder but it's England and unfortunately that will always be the way. Hopefully Rashid will develop the way everyone seems to hope. As to the original point, Anderson certainly needs to perform as we know he can as there are plenty of people - Hoggy in partic - waiting to pinch his spot, although I believe it was the right decision to stick with a winning side for this game

Anderson appears to be coming in for a lot of stick, when to be fair, on recent performances he's no worse than Hoggard. I personally, wouldn't have either of them near the side. The selectors seem fascinated with going back to tried and tested 'has-beens'. Yes Hoggard and Anderson have had glory moments, but top level sport is all about 'what-have-you-done-lately', and these two have done nothing to warrant a Test call up. They'll be bringing back Darren Gough next.

If they are going on form you can't argue with them picking Anderson. If you saw him bowl with Freddie against Durham last week he was great. Just hope he can continue this in the test arena.

Personally I'm not sure how Anderson has managed to continually regain his place in the squad. He perfomed in the second test in New Zealand, but the cloudy conditions and the pitch were very suited to Anderson and I think few would be in any doubt that had the Hogg played in those tests he would have made the ball swing like Hugh Heffner. Anderson was exposed in the ashes as distinctly average at the top level of the test macth arena and for Hoggard not to be rewarded with a recall is astounding (almost as much as the decision tod rop him after one relatively poor match) If England have lost faith with the Hogg then perhaps somebody withb more potential to reach the top would be appropriate Onions springs to mind he has been knocking on the door for a while now. For me even the likes of Plunkett didn't do too much worse than Anderson and they have been dismissed. Its time for Jimmy to prove us wrong but how many people are honestly convinced that Jimmy Anderson really has the potential to play a seven test summer bowling at a consistent economy rate whilst maintaining his threat... We should act now for next year.

Well I feel sorry for Hoggy he has done so well for England over the years and now he just gets chucked out in the rain. Poor bloke. I think he is a much better consistent bowler than Anderson and with all the competition for places in the side now I don't think Hoggy will be able to get back in the action for England. My heart goes out to you Hoggy!

Test after test, year after year, Anderson is for some unkonwn reason in the selector's mind, Why? Does he hold some dark secret over them? his performances certainly do not warrant selection. How much swing are they expecting at Lords anyway? As Bob says so many of his sessions are 'rubbish'

I'm pretty disappointed. Not that Anderson is in ahead of Hoggard, but because there doesn't seem to be 3 or 4 fit, top quality seamers in the Country. Broad and Sidebottom deserve their places as they both bowled very well in NZ. Personally I would never trust Anderson to play International Cricket. If I was a captain I'd be very reluctant to bowl him, exactly for the reasons Bob stated: for every one good session, you get three sessions of absolute tripe. Hoggard has been a good bowler, but he has had his day. If the conditions aren't in his favour, his bowling is simply cannon fodder. So...who are the alternatives? Well there aren't many. Sajid Mahmood's name gets put about, but I can't remember him bowling even one decent spell for England. Chris Tremlett...He should be a lot quicker than he is, and I also doubt his heart. He's also injury prone, so that would rule him out for me. Steve Harmison...I wish he would listen to people who know what he's doing wrong, rather than going back to Durham and burying his head in the sand. He should make a decision: Does he want to be a cricketer, or would he be happier being a househusband? There are a few others about. Simon Jones has started well for Worcs, but it is too early to push him back into the fold. Andrew Flintoff also shouldn't have even been considered until the South Africans arrived. It's lucky he got injured playing for Lancs, and not the first morning at Lords. I think it boils down to the coaching of English talent. There is such an emphasis on batting in this country, that bowling takes a back seat. In the last 10 years, every major country has had a consistent matchwinner: Australia had Warne, McGrath & Lee. SA had Donald & Pollock, India have Kumble, Harbhajan & Zaheer. Pakistan had Shoaib. Sri Lanka have Murali & Vaas. I could go on. Who have we had? When is the last time we had a bowler in test matches that averaged 26 or less? It's been a while!

Ed i have to disagree with you Anderson has always had a gnack of taking big wickets & breaking up partnerships at crucial times, he may lack a bit of consistancy but since his first days you could nasser could always throw him the ball when he needed a wicket, Hoggard agreed is world class but we only need one swing bowler & at the moment Ryan is the best by far. rememer 2005 Ashes Hoggard only bowled 5 or 6 overs with the new ball & didnt get another bowl in any test, when a batsman has worked him out Hoggard can become easy runs without being a wicket threat with an older ball, Anderson can also become easy runs but is always capable of that surprise Jaffa ball from nowhere, therefore for me Jimmy is the correct choice at this time!

Hoggard and Sidebottom are too similar and neither particularly fast. Hoggies coming towards the end of his international career too, so against New Zealand there is no doubt a younger bowler should play. Let Jimmy find his rhythm, hes not started the season so badly.

Could not agree more with you Ed. Anderson is no more than a good County bowler. When he is good he can be very good but when he is bad (three quarters of the time) he is horrid. Bring Hoggy back before the South Aricans arrive. PLEASE.

Hoggard should be in on form - along with Rampers. Anderson is far too inconsistent still to be a test match bowler. It is a real mistake to go into this match without the 2 aforementioned...............maybe selectors will come to their senses for 2nd test!

Absolutely ridiculous decision. Fair enough dropping Hoggy in New Zealand, too give him a wake up call, bur Anderson is NOT an international class bowler. i just hope the selectors see the error of their ways before the South Africans get here.
