Popeye still going strong

Craig Parry spoke to Golf Night about his hunger to win that elusive Major, and about the quality of Australian golf.

The 42-year-old, nicknamed Popeye, has won many trophies in his 22 year pro career , including six European Tour events, but Golf Night asked him if he would swap them all for a major, which has so far eluded him?

"Probably not," said Parry, "I've spoken to another guy who hasn't won a major, David Frost and we've sort of spoken about it, would you trade all of your tournaments for one tournament, and he says 'no' and I probably agree with him.

"I think I've won 20 odd tournaments now and had a lot of success and that's what makes you as a player.

"All the success and everything like that rather than just win one tournament."

But the Aussie still harbours ambitions to win on the biggest stage of all.

"I think I can (win a Major)," he said, "I think I'm playing good enough.

"With a major you have to have everything go your way - you have to have a very good draw, with tee times, wind, you just have to have everything go your way.

"I'm sure if you spoke to any of the guys who have won majors they will say 'well I got lucky with this, or lucky with that point.

"You have that time - I had a couple of chances over my career, I just didn't take advantage of it."

Parry enthuses about Australian golf, even though very few of the worlds top players make the trip to play there.

"We're up against world golf now and it makes it a lot harder - and our prize money isn't enough to entice players down here.

"We have great courses, good competition, fantastic hotels, food excellent, that's what the guys have to come out for.

"Well, they're saying 'where is Tiger? Where is Phil (Mickelson), where is Colin Montgomerie, where is (Retief) Goosen, where is (Ernie) Els?

"If they're not playing, people are going, 'well look these are the guys that are playing overseas, why aren't they here?

"However I do think we have a fantastic field any time we play in Australia, we've got guys that are winning on the PGA Tour in America, Adam Scott's and unbelievable golfer, Geoff Oglivy won a US Open, Michael Campbell is playing this week.

"We have got a number of good players, there's no question about that, we're just missing a couple of players at the top. And would they come down here to play for more money? Probably not, they need time away from the game."
