I'm fine with Faldo

Montgomerie: Enjoyed himself

Colin Montgomerie told Golf Night that recent reports of a bust-up with 2008 Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo were blown out of proportion.

Faldo was upset by Montgomerie's failure to attend three of the British team's meetings at September's Seve Trophy, and publicly criticised the Scot's conduct.

The row seemed all the more serious because Montgomerie is way off the pace in the race to make this year's Ryder Cup line-up and may have to rely on being one of Faldo's personal picks if he is to play at Valhalla in September.

But, speaking to presenters Di Stewart and Rob Lee, the eight-times European Order of Merit winner insisted there is no lingering animosity on either side.

"I'm fine with Nick," he said. "Nick said something that I'm sure he regrets saying to the press instead of to me. These things always are (blown out of proprtion).

"He put me out No 1 in the singles at the Heritage Club in the Seve Trophy, and I got the result for him.

"I had a good week, an enjoyable week with a number of new faces - in the British team especially.

"I enjoyed myself and left there having enjoyed myself. I plan to work under Nick again and look forward to it."

During his heyday, Faldo himself did not always have a reputation as a selfless team man, but Montgoemerie said he found the former world No 1's counsel invaluable at the 1993 and 1995 Ryder Cups.

"I was given Nick, if you like, by (team captain) Bernard Gallacher for the four matches at The Belfry in '93, and I learnt a lot about how to cope with certain situations when the pressure is mounting.

"I played the first three series of matches with Nick in '95, so we played seven matches in a row, if you like, and I learnt an awful lot."
