Steve Staunton will be named as the new manager of League Two strugglers Darlington on Monday, Sky Sports News understands.

The former Republic of Ireland boss will be handed the task of lifting the Quakers away from the foot of the table after a dismal start to the season.

Darlo have just two points to show from their opening 11 games of the season, with that run costing former boss Colin Todd his job after just nine matches.

Todd took charge at the Darlington Arena in the summer and was forced to piece together a squad from scratch as the club emerged from administration.

Chairman Raj Singh elected to make a change following the 1-1 draw at Grimsby and placed Craig Liddle and Neil Maddison in caretaker charge.

The duo have been unable to produce an upturn in results, despite an improvement in performances, with Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Macclesfield coming after a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Rochdale.

Staunton's first game in charge could come against Leeds United at Elland Road in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday evening.

The former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Coventry defender spent a spell on the staff of the Whites when he served as assistant manager to Gary McAllister in 2008.

He won a record 102 caps for his country but his spell in charge of the Republic was brief and unsuccessful as they failed to qualify for Euro 2008, suffering a 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Cyprus and needing a last-minute goal to defeat minnows San Marino.
