Marcos Baghdatis needed four sets to overcome Steve Darcis and reach the second round at Wimbledon.
The popular Cypriot appeared to be cruising to victory over the unseeded Belgian after taking the first two sets with ease.
However, Darcis forced a tie-break after the third set went with serve and won it to prolong the 10th seed's spell on court.
Baghdatis, a semi-finalist in 2006 and a quarter-finalist 12 months ago, took his chances in the fourth set to record a 6-3 6-2 6-7 6-3 win.
He will meet Thomas Johansson for a place in the third round after the veteran Swede fought back from two sets down to beat Vince Spadea.
"I'm pretty happy with the way I was playing on the baseline and returning,
but not so happy with the way I served," said Baghdatis.
"But I'm pretty happy to win and be in the second round, that's for sure.
"It feels good to be playing back here. To be playing on grass it feels very good, for sure. It's one of my favourite surfaces, if not my favourite one."
