Sergio Garcia was happy with his 70 on Saturday, but still feels he will need a special final round if he is to challenge for the US Open crown.
The Spaniard, who also shot 70 on Friday, now sits at three-over but appears well in contention as the Torrey Pines course bit back during the third round.
Low scores were at a premium by and large, but Garcia insisted there were still chances on offer to those who used the conditions to their advantage.
"Any time you shoot under-par in a US Open it's good," Garcia told Sky Sports.
"Today there were a lot of good birdie opportunities; nine is playing straight down wind, I only had 240 to the front, 13 is playing down wind from the front tees and then 18 front tees you can get there so I still thought it was a day you could shoot quite a low score, five-under or something like that if you play well, but I guess you have to drive it on the fairway."
Of his round, which included three birdies and two bogeys, he stated: "I was just trying to be aggressive and play my own game.
"I started a little erratic, a couple of indifferent tee-shots early on, but I managed to make a couple of good pars and then I started hitting the ball a little better.
"Unfortunately at eight and nine I felt like I left two shots there, but I had a good finish which is always good."
The Spaniard has built up some momentum after a shaky first round of 76, but still feels he has plenty to do if he is to be a contender come Sunday evening.
"I think I'm going to need a good round (on Sunday) because I still think somebody is going to finish at least three or four under-par for the tournament," he added.
" If you play well there are good birdie opportunities there so I'm going to need something big tomorrow."
