There was further ecstasy and despair for the elite WWE superstars as Backlash provided one of the greatest evening's of sports entertainment.

As well as Triple H securing his 12th title in an epic Fatal Four Way clash, and the Undertaker successfully defending his title, there were plenty of other athletes who had cause for celebration.

Shawn Michaels reacquainted himself with Batista as the pair resumed their seemingly never ending hatred towards one another.

Any resentment Batista harboured toward Michaels, however, was simply not enough to drive him to victory. Special guest referee Chris Jericho kept his distance as The Animal and HBK left no stone unturned as they continued to trade blows, in and outside of the ring.

However, it was to be HBK, despite suffering a leg injury, who was able to tune up the band once again as he delivered a deadly dose of Sweet Chin Music to seal the win.

Mammoth match-up

In a gargantuan battle of WWE giants Big Show proved that size does matter, as The Biggest Athlete in the World overcame an early onslaught from The Great Khali to pick up the victory.

The 7ft 3in Punjabi giant pummelled the Big Show early in the bruising contest - sending him outside the ring with a relentless attacking combination.

However, a thunderous bodyslam by The Giant sent the spine of the 420 pound Khali shuddering into the canvas as Big Show regained momentum.

And the five-time World Champion stunned the Indian colossus with a chokeslam to earn the pinfall victory and prove that he can still dominate even the most intimidating opponents.

Red Rage

Kane successfully defended his ECW title as he saw off rival Chavo Guerrero. The Big Red Machine silenced his new-found foe by securing a comfortable pinfall.

The win comes four weeks after the Big Red Machine won the title from Guerrero at WrestleMania XXIV after just eight seconds.

Matt Hardy ended a year-long wait by defeating MVP to secure the United States Championship.

The trash talking duo went head-to-head and it was Hardy who managed to snatch the gold away from the Ballin' superstar by delivering a title-winning Twist of Fate.
