Sheppard: New deal

Sheffield Steelers player-assistant coach Doug Sheppard has agreed a new one-year deal with the Elite League play-off champions.

The Canadian forward, who racked up 70 points in 68 games last season, is relishing the chance to defend the title.

The 31-year-old said: : "There is a feeling in our locker room, and probably around the city, that the Steelers are back and gunning for a league title, something every hockey fan in Sheffield really wants.

"As a Canadian we live for the play-offs but this club has a history of the league title and when you are here you quickly buy into the idea of bringing that trophy back to the Arena."

Coach David Matsos hailed the role Sheppard played in last season's title success and is delighted to have convinced him to stay.

He added: "Shepp was a major reason we won last year. Firstly he is a quality person, secondly a quality hockey player.

"Doug has the respect of every player, not only in our room but probably in the league."
