Weir: Euro heartbreak

David Weir has labelled Rangers' European elimination at the hands of FBK Kaunas as one of the biggest disappointments of his career.

The first leg at Ibrox ended goalless, but Kaunas secured a late 2-1 aggregate victory in Lithuania in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson's opener set his side on their way but Nerijus Radzius levelled, before a dramatic last-gasp header from former Hearts midfielder Linas Pilibaitis sent Kaunas through.

And having reached last season's Uefa Cup final with Rangers after being knocked out of the group stages of the Champions League, Weir confesses that the prospect of a season without any further European football is far from welcome.

"Of course it is," the 38-year-old told Sky Sports News when asked if the defeat was one of the lowest points of his career.

Blame

"It's a massive disappointment. It was great to experience the Champions League last year and we wanted to experience it again this year.

"We came here to try and get through to the next round of the Champions League and obviously we have not done it.

"We are disappointed with the performance and disappointed with what has happened.

"But we have got to take it on the chin. We have got nobody to blame but ourselves."

And Weir recognises that Rangers must attempt to bounce back when they begin their SPL campaign at Falkirk on Saturday.

"There is nowhere to hide," added Weir. "You have got to go out and try and win the next game and that is what we are going to try and do."
