Armful: can Drogba repeat his Atletico performance in Portugal?

Porto are always willing to have a bit of a go and with a home crowd behind them they will be determined to get a huge Premier League scalp.

It's imperative to top your group at this stage of the Champions League so I don't expect either Porto or Chelsea to give an inch on Wednesday - even if they have both already qualified.

Both will want to go into the last 16 as Group D winners so they play the second leg of their last-16 clash at home; they are both experienced campaigners in Europe and know that will give them a distinct advantage going forward.

People might try to claim that you don't get any benefits from finishing first but, I'm sorry, you do; if you get beat 2-0 away from home then you've still got a good chance of turning it around.

I always remember Jose Mourinho saying when he was in charge at Chelsea that it didn't really matter - but I think he only said that when he knew his side was going to finish second anyway.

You ask any of the players or any of the staff off the record and they will all say they would like the second leg to be away from home.

Continuity

Chelsea certainly won't want to go into Sunday's game against Arsenal with both strikers out so I imagine Carlo Ancelotti will go into this one with just a single forward and that man will be Didier Drogba.

He came back from European suspension like a man possessed against Atletico Madrid and should be fresh after missing Saturday's 4-0 victory over Wolves. He was on a one-man mission that night in Madrid. He was absolutely fantastic.

With it being away from home, I'd expect Carlo Ancelotti to go with a 4-3-3 formation rather than a 4-4-2 with the diamond in midfield.

It's a difficult one to call with such a big Premier League game on the horizon and although Ancelotti will tinker with his side I can't see him making big changes.

Continuity is key when it comes to setting up and organizing your defence and for that reason I think he will stick with Petr Cech in goal instead of allowing Henrique Hilario a crack against his former club.

If Chelsea had been playing either Atletico or Apoel Nicosia then Hilario would probably have come in but with it being Porto at the Estadio do Drago, the Czech should play.

Talent

As the match is so touch and go I think Gael Kakuta, who we saw in a cameo role on Saturday, will start on the bench. If Chelsea go 2-0 up then I'm sure he'll get another game but it's quite difficult to bring him in to start this game.

Experience counts for a lot in this scenario but there's no denying Kakuta seems to be a talent; at present he's best used when the going is good.

It's interesting to see how Chelsea get on in the absence of Frank Lampard. Liverpool are not the seam team when Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are missing, Manchester United have certainly not been the same without Cristiano Ronaldo and Arsenal sorely missed Robin van Persie on Saturday.

When you are one of the top teams you need goals from all positions and that's exactly what Lampard gives Chelsea from midfield.

Porto are not the most effective team around at the moment but you always know what you are going to get with them.

They are always willing to have a bit of a go and with a home crowd behind them they will be determined to get a huge Premier League scalp. They won't be resting players or looking for an easy way out.

They made Chelsea fight hard for their 1-0 win earlier in the competition; I thought they played extremely well for the first 20 minutes of that game but overall didn't have the necessary quality to put a dent in Chelsea's aspirations.

THOMMO'S CALL: I'm expecting this to be a low-scoring draw; I think Chelsea will have enough to get something out of the game and that will be enough for them to top the pile.

Simon Elliott (Liverpool fan) says...

I read the other day that Gerrard would leave us if we didn't finish in the top 4, now honestly, he is the reason we have been in bad form, he has rarely played this season, and your captain is the most important player of the team, he brings life, determination & attitude. LIverpool sadly, have been missing that this season, if i was a player in the Liverpool side i would say that to him. Chelsea have Terry, Arsenal have Fabregas, they are two great captains, who never use an excuse if they can't play

I hope we draw Barcelona, I would love to knock them out after they undeservedly got through thanks to Tom Henning Ovrebo. We need to face the best first to see how good we are. Arsenal will be tough it will be the first game we have had were a team will be making alot of chances. They will be dangerous but we haveto make it harder for them to pass around and hopefully Anelka and Drogba will have to much power for their defence. We will see

As a Man Utd Fan since my childhood (35+ years) this is the first time i have felt compelled to say that they were an utter disgrace tonight!!! An absolutely shameful display and disregard for all those fans that actually paid to watch their team put in the most inept performance i can remember.. Shambles, rubbish, useless does not even begin to cover it and, as for fergie saying his "young players" were unlucky!! What an insult to all those paying fans. Utd got exactly what they deserved tonight and CSKA also deserved to beat them a couple of weeks ago too.. As a UTD fan i can conclude 3 things. 1] When they meet a "good team" in the Champions League they will be battered and that is including if they play either Chelsea or Arsenal who are far superior in all departments. 2] They will not win a thing this season because they lack the desire to win, perfectly illustrated tonight. 3] And i never thought i would say this but this has to be Fergies last season!! Jose for next season. time for a regime change. After tonight they should feel ashamed, but they won't and couldn't care less because they are all driving home in their big cars to their big houses and huge bank balances whilst those poor fans who spent loads to go and watch them win tonight are poorer for it!!

Stick with Benitez. He's done well for the last 5 years and even though this is quite a major blip as long as we get fourth spot then we can kick on next year like we didn't do this year. I'm sure if he'd had the money in the summer then can't see why he wouldn't have brought in players like David Villa and Silva; but that's gone now and he's got to try and get some players in January as I don't think Man City are exactly nailed on for fourth with their form at the moment.

Thommo, what's imperative is qualifying for the next stage--just ask Gerrard, Carragher, Reina, Benitez etc.Chelsea have done that with 2 games to spare. Liverpool cant with 1 game to play. As far as I am concerned the only advantage in topping your group is playing the 2nd leg of the next stage at home. I hope Chelsea get drawn against either Lyon or Florence as that will prove how abysmal Liverpool really are.

LOVED seeing liverpool get knocked out.it showed how pathetic they are when they were watching the other game having to depend on another club.I bet they will say the match on Sunday turns everything around,c'mon if the man utd game couldn't ignite their season nothing will.they can't afford to sack benitez anyway but if he were to go I think torres would leave as well no question and the other spaniards as well but saying that only one of them is good.I think draw on Sunday will be the most likely outcome.man utd for life.

Kieran Marchant (Chelsea fan) says...

i think this will be a very fast and hard match. If chelsea put out a strong team we may as well call them leaders of group D but have to battle themselfs past the likes of bruno alves, hulk and rodregiuz. But if we see a preformence like we saw from chelsea against wolves i would garente they will be group D winners

Nash Sondhi (Liverpool fan) says...

Well Rafa and Liverpool - Dont deserve to be in the next knockout stage of the Champions league ..Liverpools team selection is very poor all season ..Rafa move on mate ..You`ve done half a decent job in the 5 years you`ve been at Anfield ,but your times up !..How you can pick Kuyt before Babel is a JOKE all season ..give Babel a decent run on the Right hand wing or up front on his own when Torres is out ..Rafa you`ve probably ended Babels career ,the way you`ve treated Ryan ...How on earth NGOG & KUYT get in the team before Babel is another JOKE !.. Babel would go straight into the Arsenal team and do a dec ent job for Arsne Wenger and probably go sraight into any of the teams above Liverpool in the Premiership ...Bring back King Kenny to handle the job ..Im a Liverpool fan all my life ,but i got to say RAFA your times up ..MOVE ON NOW LEAVE ANFIELD !..Lucas ,Insua ,Kuyt,Ngog ,El Zhar,Deggen, even Skrtel ...are all a waste of money being spent every week on there WAGES ...when we could get atleast 2/3 decent quality players in to balance out the team ..How can Rafa leave out Reira at the beginning of the season after the performances Reira gave in all the games he played in last season ..And as for Aquillani ..ask yourself Rafa - would Fergie or Ancelloti go out and buy a injured player for ¿20m who will miss the first 4 months of the season ..NO !...Liverpool will have to enter Europe through the Inter-Toto play -offs as I dont think they got any chance of finishing in the top 7 of the Premiership this season ..Sorry to all the Liverpool fans across the globe ,but our team is turning into a Comedy act ,just like JEDWARD on the X-factor ....MOVE ON PLEASE RAFA ..your`e NOT the man to bring home the Premiership title to Anfield !...Nash-Luton !
