Horrow show: Steven Davis is distraught after Daniel Tudor saves his penalty

Under Ronald Koeman AZ are not a bad team but they are hardly setting the Eredivisie alight either. They are certainly not in Arsenal's class.

In their present form Arsenal shouldn't have too much to worry about when AZ Alkmaar visit the Emirates on Wednesday.

That said I do expect Arsene Wenger to make a lot of changes from the side that swept Spurs aside last weekend in the North London derby.

He knows three points will enable them to qualify from Group H so he just has to make sure he picks a side that does enough, so expect to see several fringe players.

The likes of Robin van Persie, who has had his injury problems, are so vital to Arsenal's season that it isn't worth taking the gamble and starting with them

If the Gunners really needed the result - if it was in doubt - then by all means give yourself the option of calling your best players off the bench but van Persie and Cesc Fabregas are going to be so influential in the Premier League and the Champions League games to come that I can't see Wenger starting with them.

Dominated

Arsenal should really have won in Holland when the sides met last month. Charlie Nicholas was covering the game for Soccer Special and said Arsenal were passing it around at will. It was another match - like the West Ham game - where they should have had it dead and buried, over and done with.

Instead, they didn't kill them off and ended up conceding a late David Mendes da Silva goal. But it was a game that Arsenal dominated even though they were away from home.

Under Ronald Koeman AZ are not a bad team but they are hardly setting the Eredivisie alight either. They are certainly not in Arsenal's class.

They are seventh in the league after their 1-0 away win over Groningen, which probably lines up with the relegation area in our Premier League.

Yes, Koeman has got a good CV as a manager but unfortunately for him his current team is not in the same mould as him in his playing days.

He'll know his side came up short at the DSB Stadion and as much as he'll like to go to Arsenal and win the game, he could be looking at damage limitation. I suspect he'll be hoping Arsenal don't field a full-strength side.

THOMMO'S CALL: Arsenal, if they get into full flow and get an early goal, could go on to score a few. But it will depend entirely on the team that Wenger decides to put out. Nicklas Bendtner is out for a little while and although he is not prolific by any means I imagine he may give Eduardo a start in this game.

Unirea Urziceni v Rangers

Rangers were absolute desperate as they went down 4-1 to the Romanian champions at Ibrox - and that was a game they thought they could get three points from!

They've only got one to their name after three games so far so they've got it all to do in Bucharest. These are absolutely desperate times for Rangers and desperate times, it has to be said, for Scottish football in general.

Celtic and Rangers are the bright lights of the SPL but neither is performing to a good enough level in Europe. A few years ago clubs like Unirea would not have been able to compete with the cream of the Scottish league so it shows you how far they have slipped on the radar.

There were horror goals all round when the teams met at Ibrox - and it's a sure sign things are going wrong when mistakes go against you the way they did Rangers that night.

I'll tell you something. Rangers supporters love their European trips but there won't be as many fans going over there as there would usually be - and I don't blame them! They'll be looking at this one and thinking 'my goodness, I'll save my money with Christmas around the corner.' Rangers will still get a decent following, I reckon, but nothing like they used to get.

Unirea are an up-and-coming team and they will be absolutely flying and licking their lips in anticipation of this fixture after getting their first Champions League victory.

Dan Petrescu knows the British game well. He knows you've got to be disciplined and organised; he'll make sure his players don't get carried away.

THOMMO'S CALL: Rangers have played in Romania three times and have yet to score a goal so I can't predict anything other than a defeat. I will be shocked if they do win because their confidence in Europe must be absolutely shot.

ross fisher, firstly youre not getting into england none of our clubs will welcome you and the premier legaue will reject it you want come here you start from the bottom like the welsh sides did. as for your remark of rangers having more quality than unirea sorry but no matter how lucky they were gettin thumped 4-1 in your own back yard says only one thing that they are a bettter team than you.you are out and it isnt down to money either its down lack of quality and negative tactics in your current squad. if moneys the problem then ok how unirea manager to hump you if they are apparently smaller and less financially backed than you are? with any luck tonight will be arsenal 5-0 az, unirea 4-0 rangers

Rangers' trouble is they lack pace at the back, we're always exposed by teams on the counter, Sevilla game a prime example and Unirea's only goal that didnt come from a set piece was from a move done on the break. We need Lee Wallace from Hearts and Goncalves for left back and centre back respectively as Papac looks shaky on european nights all too often and we need another athletic centre back to replace Weir, he is also too slow for these continental forwards.

Dominic Satny (Celtic fan) says...

I agree. Scottish football is desperate at the moment. It is the weakest Celtic and Rangers teams I can remember. Rangers lack of funding and Celtics mismanagement have taken a toll on both clubs. Bring back Strachen. Middlesboro have got themselves a cracking manager. Over the last 10 years the English Premiership have flourished and grown to become the best league in the world, whilst the Scottish league has withered. Celtic and Rangers cannot compete financially with even the weakest Premiership clubs. Clubs in Scotland and the SPL need to come up with some sort of strategy that will imoprove the game and raise the profile of Scottish clubs.

Can't see anything but a defeat for Rangers? Well, i for one disagree. This game is at a neutral ground and even after that shocking defeat at Ibrox, Rangers still have far more quality than Petrescu's side. Just remember Phil we don't get the TV revenue of our friends in the English game but if we did we would be bigger YES bigger than the likes of Villa, Spurs even your Liverpool. Rangers also hold the record for a travelling support to an away game in the Champions League. In terms of support only Man United can match us or Celtic. The goal posts change if we get into England.

I don't think Rangers will be in it any longer because their not doing quite well in the Scottish League and the Champions League. They haven't even won a match in europe been frashed 4-1 twice against Unirea and Seville but they did well in day 1 drawind 1 each against Stuttgart, Even Stuttgart played the better football but I still don't think Rangers will make it in the next round because 2 difficult away matches coming up and one last home match and that wouldn't be easy. Walter Smith will have to figure out what they will have to put out to try and make it through to the next round. Uneria and Seville will make it to the next round I believe.

Well i will be surprised if Ranges win myself. Things are just going soo bad atm like for us :/ but i swear im relli eager for them to thump unirea tomorrow night. a 3-0 win wuld be brilliant tho i cant see it happening. and as for scotish football its gettin as bad as northern irish league footy and im form northern ireland and tht bad :L:L lol. but hay ill be sitting down watching the match cheering the gers on. we may loose games and some fans but tht wont stop the hardcore losing their love for the club ;)

Tom O'brien (Manchester United fan) says...

Having played well against AZ Alkmaar and only come away with a point in Holland, Arsenal will be keen to put that right with a win tomorrow night which would pretty much guarantee their place in the last 16. I can't forsee any problems for them unless Alkmaar coach Ronald Koeman has something up his sleeve to suprise Arsenal but I don't see it coming. With regard to Rangers, after their 4-1 crushing defeat to Urinea Urziceni at home, I think they will struggle to put up a better fight and even produce a win in Romania but even if they do, they still have to win their away game against Sevilla and their home game against Stuttgart. I can't forsee it but the players have to believe in themselves because anything can happen in football. One fluke, and you may win 1-0 despite what the other team play like on the night. So Rangers have to have confidence in themselves but all I can say is good luck to them because as I say, I don't see it happening.

Raymond Allan (Celtic fan) says...

being a celtic fan i have to agree both sides of the old firm are as bad as each other and on the topic of english premier league we would struggle in the championship.
