Australia international Chris Latham needs a full knee reconstruction that will sideline him for at least six months.
Latham, 31, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during training and is expected to have surgery as early as this weekend.
Although the full-back expects to be fit in time for the World Cup in September, the full extent of the injury will not be known until he undergoes the operation.
"We suspect it is a high grade tear, but if there are still some fibres attached we may leave it to repair itself, otherwise we will intervene to re-attach the ligament," said a Queensland Reds medical spokesman.
Latham, who won the John Eales medal as Australia's best international player last season, is certain to miss the entire Super 14 season as well as the Wallabies' upcoming Tests against Wales, Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa.
