The first instalment of the trilogy contained plenty of excitment as Arsenal were held 1-1 at home by Liverpool on Wednesday night. Emmanuel Adebayor headed the Gunners in front before Dirk Kuyt, who was fortunate not to concede a penalty in the second half, equalised. Nicklas Bendtner then denied team-mate Cesc Fabregas a winner in a match which has whetted the appetite for Saturday's Premier League showdown and next week's second leg at Anfield.
The Fenerbahce forward went from villain to hero as he gave the Turkish side a real chance of progressing to the semi-finals for the first time. Though he turned the ball into his own net in the first half, he responded in commendable style and scored a marvellous winner for Fenerbahce late on.
One goal stands out from the eight scored in this week's Champions League ties and that was Deivid's stunner which secured Fenerbahce a 2-1 win over Chelsea. The Brazilian had earlier put through his own net, but he recovered from the setback to collect the ball 30 yards from goal with nine minutes to go and arrowed an unstoppable shot into the top corner which left Carlo Cudicini with no chance.
Having recovered from a groin complaint to start in Rome, the veteran keeper summoned up all his agility to keep United in front just past the hour mark. Roma whipped a corner in to the near post, which was deftly glanced towards goal by Mirko Vucinic, only for Van der Sar to thrust out a hand for a superb reaction save.
The Liverpool attacker had brought his side level in the first half with a close-range finish, but he could easily have contributed to his team going into the second leg behind. Arsenal's Alexander Hleb burst into the box with a brilliant run and Kuyt grabbed the midfielder's left arm, prompting the Belarussian to tumble to the ground. Dutch referee Pieter Vink awarded a corner, Kuyt insisted it was not a penalty, but Arsene Wenger begged to differ.
Goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Doni gifted goals in the respective defeats for Schalke and Roma, but Bendtner's lack of dexterity denied Arsenal a winner at home to Liverpool. With the score at 1-1, and the Gunners pushing for a second goal, it appeared the moment had come when Jose Reina could only palm a cross out to Cesc Fabregas. The midfielder's shot was heading into the corner of the net, only for Bendtner to get in the way with the sort of foot movement which will not see him invited on to Strictly Come Dancing. The offisde flag did go up, but would it have been raised if Bendtner had jumped out of the way?.
Trailing 1-0 to Cristiano Ronaldo's first-half header, Roma had a golden chance to equalise early in the second half when Mirko Vucinic's long throw-in was flicked on to the far post. Panucci was lurking unmarked, but the defender side-footed his chance over the bar when he should have at least tested Edwin van der Sar. How Roma would have wished it was Panucci taking the throw, and Vucinic taking the chance.
The Chelsea midfielder reacted angrily to being substituted 15 minutes from time during his team's 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce. The score was 1-1 at the time when Lampard was replaced by John Obi Mikel and the England international chucked away a training top before sitting in the dugout and throwing his boots off in a fit of pique. Temper, temper.
The Barcelona striker became the second-youngest scorer in Champions League history when he grabbed his team's only goal against Schalke. Thierry Henry's shot had been parried by Schalke keeper Neuer and the Frenchman rolled the ball across goal for Bojan to fire high into an unguarded net. Only Peter Ofori-Quaye was younger when he scored for Olympiakos in the Champions League.
