Brett Favre started life as a New York Jet with two touchdown passes in a victory at Miami, Tom Brady's season could be over after he limped out early in New England's win over Kansas City, and there was surprise home defeats for Indianapolis and San Diego on an eventful opening Sunday of NFL action.

Favre showed all his old skills to steer the Jets to a 20-14 success over the man he replaced in New York, Chad Pennington, and the Dolphins.

Multiple Super Bowl winner and current league MVP Brady hobbled off with a knee injury as New England beat Kansas City 17-10, while Donovan McNabb inspired Philadelphia to a crushing 38-3 win against St Louis.

There was a shock result at the new Lucas Oil Stadium where Indianapolis went down 29-13 to Chicago, although Peyton Manning at least came through his first start since knee surgery unscathed.

Reggie Bush excelled both rushing and receiving as New Orleans edged out an impressive Tampa Bay effort in Louisiana and Tennessee proved too strong at home for Jacksonville.

Buffalo made an early dent in the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta's rookie quarterback Matt Ryan looked like a seasoned veteran as he and running back Michael Turner stole the show against Detroit.

New York Jets 20-14 Miami Dolphins

Brett Favre took nine minutes of his first game with the Jets to make his mark, hanging up a trademark 56-yard pass for Jerricho Cotchery to score the opening touchdown at Dolphin Stadium.

A 22-yarder to Chansi Stuckey was also typical Favre - starting life in a Jets uniform after 16 years with the Green Bay Packers.

The 38-year-old was 15 of 22 on the day for 194 yards as he defeated Chad Pennington - the man who had to leave New York to make way for the future Hall of Famer.

Pennington also emerged with credit, connecting with 26 of his 43 pass attempts for 251 yards and two touchdown passes, the second of them to David Martin deep in the fourth quarter made the Jets sweat.

Both sides looked far better than last season with their new triggermen in charge.

Kansas City Chiefs 10-17 New England Patriots

Tom Brady lasted just half a quarter against Kansis City before a knee injury forced him out of the game and placed a dark cloud over the Patriots' season.

Back-up Matt Cassel had previously thrown just 39 passes in three years behind Brady, but he was forced into the action and responded by completing 13 of 18 attempts for 152 yards and one touchdown.

Cassel found Randy Moss in the second quarter which, coupled with Sammy Morris' five-yard run into the end zone, just kept the Patriots in front.

Dwayne Bowe caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Damon Huard before New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski's late field goal sealed it for the AFC champions.

St. Louis Rams 3-38 Philadelphia Eagles

Donovan McNabb looked as good as ever as he picked apart an awful St Luis Rams outfit with 361 passing yards and three touchdowns - one a 90-yard bomb to Hank Baskett.

Philadelphia piled up 522 totals yards on offence while the defence offered up just 109 to a Rams team that looked every bit the side that went 3-13 last season.

The Eagles, by contrast, looked as if they mean business this time around, especially if McNabb can stay fit.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-24 New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay did a great job of stifling the New Orleans offence for almost three quarters of the game inside the Louisiana Superdome, but Drew Brees found a way for the hosts to sneak a win.

The visitors led 13-10 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter when Brees sent up an 84-yard missile for a Devery Henderson touchdown.

After a cagey game the offence came thick and fast in the fourth quarter although only two touchdowns were scored - Jeff Garcia found Ike Hilliard before Brees connected with the excellent Reggie Bush to seal it for the Saints.

Bush rushed for 51 yards from 14 carries along with eight receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown in a superb all-round display.

Detroit Lions 21-34 Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta rookie quarterback Matt Ryan was expected to need time to settle into NFL life - he took all of 90 seconds before hoisting a 62-yard touchdown pass for Michael Jenkins to announce himself to the league and, more specifically, the Lions secondary.

Running back Michael Turner, another off-season acquisition, had a monster game with two touchdowns, one a 66-yard run, to fire the Falcons into a 21-0 lead after the opening quarter.

Detroit came back into it with touchdowns from Kevin Smith and Roy Williams, but Jerious Norwood ran in from 10 yards and Jason Elam kicked two field goals to keep the Falcons in front.

Ryan only attempted 13 throws all game for 161 yards as the Falcons used the red-hot Turner, who bounded away for 220 yards off 22 carries.

Seattle Seahawks 10-34 Buffalo Bills

The Seahawks were put to the sword in Buffalo as the Bills special teams powered them to a dominating victory.

After Marshawn Lynch had ran in a regulation touchdown from 21 yards, Buffalo's special teams outfit took over, with Roscoe Parrish firstly returning a punt 63 yards into the Seattle end zone.

The fans' favourite fake field goal then came out as Bills punter Brian Moorman produced a 19-yard TD pass for defensive end Ryan Denney.

Kicker Rian Lindell then recovered a fumbled Seattle return enabling Trent Edwards to send a 30-yard touchdown pass to Robert Royal as Buffalo made a winning start to the season for just the fourth time in 12 years.

Houston Texans 17-38 Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers looked powerful in the air and on the ground as they comfortably had enough in hand to see-off the Texans in Pittsburgh.

Ben Roethlisberger was near perfect, throwing for 137 yards and two touchdowns to Hines Ward with just one incomplete pass on his record.

'Fast' Willie Parker was just that with 138 yards from 25 carries and three touchdowns.

Cincinnati Bengals 10-17 Baltimore Ravens

Defence was again the key for the Baltimore Ravens as they eked out a win against the toothless Bengals - whose quarterback Carson Palmer threw for less than 100 yards for the first time since the end of 2005.

Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco scampered 38 yards for a touchdown and threw for 129 yards to help both himself and coach John Harbaugh to a first NFL win.

The Bengals only managed a field goal and a Jonathan Joseph fumble return into the end zone as their much-vaunted offence failed to fire.

Jacksonville Jaguars 10-17 Tennessee Titans

Defence was the key to the Tennesee's victory over AFC South rivals Jacksonville, with Jaguars quarterback David Garrard sacked seven times, spilling a fumble and intercepted twice.

Garrard still threw a touchdown pass and 215 yards, more than his opposite number Vince Young managed, but LenDale White's one-yard run into the end zone was enough to seal it for the hosts.

Dallas Cowboys 28-10 Cleveland Browns

Marion Barber rushed for two touchdowns in the Dallas Cowboys' 28-10 success at the Cleveland Browns.

Barber had 80 yards on 16 carries and entered the end zone from one yard in both the first and second quarters, although he left the game in the second half with a rib injury.

Terrell Owens also scored on a 35-yard pass from Tony Romo in the second quarter before the result was iced by Barber's back-up, Felix Jones, who went in from 11 yards in the third quarter.

The Browns' points came from Kellen Winslow's two-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter and a late 34-yard field goal from Phil Dawson.

Carolina Panthers 26-24 San Diego Chargers

Dante Rosario's late touchdown saw the Carolina Panthers to a 26-24 victory at the San Diego Chargers.

Rosario hauled in a 14-yard pass from Jake Delhomme as time expired to seal the result of a topsy-turvy contest for the Panthers.

San Diego had scored two of their three touchdowns in the final quarter, Philip Rivers finding Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson in the end zone to turn a 19-10 deficit into a 24-19 lead with two minutes and 27 seconds remaining.

But Delhomme led the visitors on an 11-play, 68-yard drive that culminated in Rosario's match winner.

Arizona Cardinals 23-13 San Francisco 49ers

Kurt Warner threw for 197 yards and a touchdown as the Arizona Cardinals notched a 23-13 success over the San Francisco 49ers.

After Frank Gore gave the 49ers an early advantage at Candlestick Park with a 41-yard touchdown run, Warner found Larry Fitzgerald on a one-yard pass early in the second quarter to give the Cardinals a lead they never relinquished.

Arizona's offence had a well-balanced look - Edgerrin James mustered 100 yards on the ground from 26 carries, while Neil Rackers slotted three short-range field goals to keep the scoreboard ticking.

It was a bad day for San Francisco quarterback JT O'Sullivan, who lost two fumbles and threw an interception.

Chicago Bears 29-13 Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts went down 29-13 to the Chicago Bears, their first defeat in September since 2004.

The Colts badly fluffed their lines in the opening regular season match to be held at their impressive new Lucas Oil Stadium.

Peyton Manning, playing for the first time since surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee, threw for 257 yards and a touchdown but it was not enough to quell the resurgent Bears.

Rookie running back Matt Forte was Chicago's star, rushing for 123 yards - including a 50-yard touchdown effort - on 23 carries.
