It is hard to look past United retaining their top-flight crown. Heading into this encounter well aware that three points would secure a 10th Premier League title, Sir Alex Ferguson's men were handed the perfect opportunity to complete their task as they were awarded a debatable penalty in the 33rd minute, which Cristiano Ronaldo duly dispatched. Proceedings were not without controversy as United had been lucky to escape a penalty appeal when Rio Ferdinand appeared to handle and Paul Scholes appeared fortunate to avoid his marching orders, more of which later, but the Red Devils were never truly rattled. And then the script was perfectly crafted as United legend Ryan Giggs came off the bench to ensure the silverware was draped in red with 10 minutes remaining.
Were it not for the brilliance of Ronaldo this term, the Spaniard's mantelpiece would be arcing under the weight of various accolades in recognition of a simply superb season. Torres summed up his outstanding ability with another virtuoso display in Liverpool's 2-0 victory away to Tottenham. Admittedly a dead rubber of a fixture, but Torres - who has proved more than money well spent following last summer's move from Atletico Madrid - had the Tottenham defence chasing shadows and when he netted his side's second he set a new record of 24 goals scored by an overseas player in a debut Premier League campaign.
Fabio Rochemback provided a stunning strike as Middlesbrough put Manchester City to the sword with a 8-1 victory at The Riverside. As the clock ticked to 80 minutes in Teesside and with City already five goals behind, George Boateng was felled 35 yards from goal. The Boro faithful were already in party mood as Rochemback stepped over the ball and the Brazilian simply added a little spark to the festivities as he curled into the top corner.
The Wigan goalkeeper produced a stunning low stop to deny Wayne Rooney with United still only tensely in front at 1-0. Kirkland will have caught the eye of England boss Fabio Capello over recent weeks as his heroics helped the Latics move clear of the drop zone and this stop from his international colleague Rooney will have only enhanced his credentials for a starting place.
The Welshman epitomises United under Ferguson and when he came off the bench to hit the back of the net with his side's second against Wigan with 10 minutes to play at the JJB Stadium the Premier League title celebrations truly began. Giggs' showing also allowed the 34-year-old to equal Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 758 appearances for United, a tally he looks set to eclipse in the UEFA Champions League final in 21st May.
Having already gone in referee Steve Bennett's little black book for ploughing through Wilson Palacios, United midfielder Scholes, not known for his tackling finesse, was extremely happy to avoid a second caution following a deliberate first half block on the same opponent. Title race runners-up Chelsea will be left wondering what might have been had Wigan been competing against 10 men as opposed to a full allocation of foes.
This is perhaps a case of rubbing salt in relegation wounds as Birmingham suffered the drop despite a 4-1 win over Blackburn at St Andrews, but Jerome's miss was a shocker. The striker also netted twice in his side's victory to add to the cruelty of this call, but when Jerome used his ankle from three yards out to send a David Murphy cross ballooning over the bar at 1-1, the Birmingham supporters must have known it was not to be their day.
The pressure was on City manager Sven Goran Eriksson ahead of kick-off as rumours persist that he has been set for the chop for a number of weeks, despite only taking over at Eastlands at the beginning of the season. However, a 8-1 away hammering at the hands of Middlesbrough is unlikely to help his cause. Had this result come at the hands of one of the Premier League's big boys there could be some case for the defence, but the look on Eriksson's face at the final whistle appeared to be that of a man wondering where he has put his Curriculum Vitae.

I totally agree with the Middlesbrough man Michael Whitmore. How can Torres possibly have got player of the weekend? He set a new record with a goal which was first class but the rest of his performance was ordinary. Downing should have got this nod with a sublime volleyed goal out of his two and a great all round contribution in setting up plays and goals elsewhere. I honestly wonder if the people on Sky that make these lists ever watch anything other than the big 4 play.

I don't see why Torres makes the team of the week and Yakubu doesn't. Everton's game had much more at stake and he scored twice, does that count for nothing?

Obviously it was a great day for Manchester United, but lets give a little love to the bottom of the table Fulham's triumph is a true Cinderella story.

surely stewart downign or afonso alves for player of the weekend. torres only got one goal against a tottenham team that cant wait for next season and playing like a typical end of season team. afonso alves gets his first hatrick in english football and stewart downing orchestrates a 8-1 win over a team thats lookign to defend their manager.
