Our readers' choices will be revealed as part of a special Sky Sports end-of-season review entitled Premier League - Team of the Season to be broadcast at 6pm on 14th May on Sky Sports 1. To make
Deputy Editor Mark Buckingham makes his selections, together with a look at his pre-season predictions, some of which proved a trifle wide of the mark!
Ivanovic: Have you seen this man?
David James may take many of the plaudits, but for me he has made just as many mistakes as before, only he has got away with them this season. Therefore, my goalkeeping choice is Tim Howard - like all keepers he is prone to the odd error - but he has conceded 10 goals fewer than James and has made some stunning saves.
Protecting the American are his former Manchester United team-mates Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who have once again proved to be the outstanding central defensive pairing this season and are the perfect match. Howard's Everton colleague Joleon Lescott slots in at left-back after chipping in with some big goals in addition to displaying his defensive qualities, while I wouldn't say anyone has been outstanding as a right-back this season, so Bacary Sagna just edges out Glen Johnson after a solid first campaign at Arsenal.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the obvious candidate to take the right-wing berth, for reasons see below, while Niko Kranjcar has enjoyed an impressive debut season for Portsmouth and is picked on the opposite flank. Mathieu Flamini has taken on the 'water carrier' role with great relish for Arsenal this season and is accompanied in midfield by Michael Essien, who continues to be a powerhouse for Chelsea and their most consistent performer.
Up front, Fernando Torres has quickly adjusted to the demands of Premier League football after his club record arrival at Liverpool and he is partnered in attack by Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz, who must rank as the bargain of the season.
There seems little point in suggesting anyone else for this award as almost 40 goals in a season would be considered a marvellous achievement for a world-class striker, let alone a winger. He continues to infuriate opponents and opposition fans with his tricks and other antics, but the Premier League would be a poorer place without his talent.
An FA Cup final appearance, and a consistent challenge for European qualification through the league, means Redknapp is my choice for manager of the year. He may have bought a dud in David Nugent, but he has also made a string of quality signings over the past 12 months to add flair to the undoubted steel in his side. And, using average attendance as a guide, Pompey are the second smallest team in the top flight, so to attract the players he has to Fratton Park and to achieve what he has, once again underlines Redknapp's qualities.
Okay, so he may turn 24 in the summer, but he was unheralded when he moved to the Premier League from Honduras last summer. On the recommendation of Arsene Wenger, he was taken to Birmingham by Steve Bruce and then followed the same manager to Wigan in the January transfer window. He has flourished in the centre of midfield and has been a key figure in Wigan's climb towards safety. He has been linked with Manchester United and can expect to go on to greater things next season.
For the second season running, Blackburn boss Mark Hughes has brought in a top-line striker for very little outlay. A fee of roughly £3.5million was all that was required to bring Santa Cruz to Ewood Park from Bayern Munich and the Paraguayan has paid back more than that with 20 goals in all competitions. Consider that Derby paid around the same sum for Robert Earnshaw, and it's not hard to see who has got value for money.
Perhaps it is harsh to brand someone a flop when they haven't even played, but you would expect a sighting of a player who cost £9million, even if it was Chelsea who were paying. The Serbian defender has yet to make a single appearance in a Blue shirt since his January arrival from Lokomotiv Moscow, if indeed he has even arrived in the country.
Perhaps a strange choice, but it is one of the few games this season that I can say I actually enjoyed and thought this is how football should be played in every game. United took an early lead and, for the first half-hour, pinged the ball from one end of the pitch to the other with wonderful aplomb. Then Boro did what few other lower table teams tend to do against United and went forward, and with some quality as well. Afonso Alves produced two excellent finishes and Boro had further opportunities to increase their lead before Wayne Rooney plundered an equaliser. Maybe the snow in early April affected my judgement, but I just thought it was a wonderfully open, entertaining, end-to-end game - makes you wonder why Boro don't try to play that way every week.
Chelsea fans may, nay, will disagree given the impact of Mourinho's replacement at Stamford Bridge, but I, for one, shed no tears upon the Portuguese's exit from the Premier League. The self-titled 'Special One' was merely a poor man's Brian Clough in my book and hardly pushed back the boundaries with the way Chelsea played during his reign. Sure, they were successful, but he quickly became tiresome with his antics and his ham-fisted theatrical gestures and snide asides.
The respect issue has come to the fore in recent weeks and the worst example of a lack of respect towards officials was Ashley Cole's petulant show in Chelsea's 4-4 draw at Tottenham Hotspur. Lucky not to be sent off straight away for an awful challenge on Alan Hutton, Cole then turned his back on referee Mike Riley when he was being booked for the tackle. And he wonders why fans give him stick!
This goal had athleticism, power and precision as Adebayor gave Arsenal an early lead in their 1-1 draw at St James' Park in December. Emmanuel Eboue flung in a cross from the right which Adebayor chested into the air before swivelling to catch a stunning volley at a decent height that fairly rocketed past helpless Newcastle keeper Shay Given.

Titles winners absolutly right, i agree with the biggest flop as the prediction says bent cost nearly 17 million and hasnt reached the heady heights of last season, but i still think that a couple of others could vie for the wooden spoon malouda hasnt been brilliant and maybe no-ones noticed that rasiak is playing in the premier league so hes another one, the player of the season is undoubtedly ronaldo theres only been maybe 2 others who have even come near to that and as a man united fan i can admit that torres and adebayor have both had incredible years... i agree that the season lowpoint in more than one incedent has been ashley cole, the hutton tackle, the ref harrassment and other incidents, the bargain buy i feel is santa cruz as he cost a paltry £3.5 million which is peanuts for a striker in the premiership, others could push it but hes really the outstanding bargain........ the rising star could go to many players wheater, young, palacios, o'hara etc.. but theres 2 that have caught my eye this year and that is obviously anderson of my beloved man untied and luis valencia of wigan, anderson who has just been a revelation who has even give paul scholes a cut down on games and valencia who brings a bit of creativity and guile to a wigan team fighting to stay in the prem both young outstanding players...... and the manager of the year finally could be one of four managers, fergie for again defyign the odds and yeilding another brilliant young team, jaunde 'one day' ramos, who has changed spurs into trophy winners even if it is the carling cup, martin o'neill who again has proved his quality at picking good young british talent mixed with other experienced foreigners, and finally old harry redknapp who has proved money is no barrier to getting quality signings and took pompy tpo their first cup final for god knows years. i hope to god this gets posted took forever to write hope people agree aswell

No Ashley Young or Gabby Agbonlahor as rising star? Evra should be in ahead of Sagna as well. You picked Healy as best buy? Hahahahahaha. In terms of flops I'd like to hear about what Man U fans think of Nani for the money they paid. He's getting a lot of stick for his wasteful performances against Chelsea and Barca. Few good games here and there, but for the sake of consistency at a big club is he a good buy or a waste of money? Other flops should be Chelsea's free three. Sidwell, Ben Haim and Pizzaro have been awful, and no doubt all three will be off to new clubs this summer.

rio ferdinand? why is he in every team, as mentioned by William he only looks good alongside vidic. It would have to be dunne, richards or woodgate in defence cos ferdinand is a joke. England captain not a chance. I would have liked to have seen Ashley Young in there instead of Kranjcar and Joe Hart in goal. Hart is only in his early 20s and is looking like a future england no.1 so he should be in there with a string of impressive saves.

Very intresting comments and picks. i disagree with Mourinho's departure quote. He was a genius for Chelsea, but i must admit that even i thought he should learn to shut his mouth on certain occasions. Ashley Young should be in the team of the year. he has been fantastic. i dont understand Ferdinand though, as pointed out, Vidic makes him look good. Vidic is world class. The flop of the season, other than the entire Derby team, has got to be Anelka since he joined Chelsea, or Bianchi for Man City. Also Healy...i also thought he was buy of the season, but why oh why did Fulham not play him as a regular? finally the best buy would have to be Torres and Santa Cruz. i also like the look of Zarate at St Andrews

Lescott is good, but Evra is truly a better choise. James is better than Howard. Otherwise, I agree with the rest. The most complete player all together, is of course Essien.

It's not fair to brand Ivanovic as the biggeast flop, or as a flop at all for that matter!! He has been injured and has only figured in our reserve team on the way back to full fitness. You can only assess Ivanovic next season.

Dave Anderson (Chelsea fan) says...
How can you say Branislav is a flop when he's been injured on only coming back to full fitness? No point in pointing him in now with the season at the business end when he is not fully match fit, If chelsea were out of the title race i'm sure he would have gotten a few games but to brand him a flop is a disgrace

Thats my team of the season too - like your dark horse - i think if Thaksin gets rod of Sven then he's a complete idiot!

I'd have to agree with Dean Robson... Wheater the rising star of the year. Lescott is more of a centre back for Everton than a left back isn't he?? Even still - according to stats; Clichy has the highest amount of tackles and percentage of successful tackles and more assists and passes than Evra. Low point should definitely be Eduardo breaking his leg.

While everyone debates the best Premier League team of the season, i just thought it might be interesting to see what the worst might look like! Here is what i came up with. Anyone agree or disagree? Robinson, McShane, Kaboul, Bramble, Riise, Eboue, Savage, Alan Smith, Malouda Nugent, Voronin.

Strongly agree with choice of Roque Santa Cruz up frony. But find the choice of Howard baffling. David James has been incredible for Portsmouth over the last 18 months, especially with all his past problems, and defies his age. Also Nugent has underperformed - true - but a dud is too harsh. He has scored vital FA Cup goals, has struggled with injuries, and might yet prove to be the hero on Cup Final day. This may come back and bite you Mr Buckingham

Surely David Wheater should be rising star of the season. He's the reason why southgate saw a top-class defender, woodgate, surplus to requirements. hes definately made a huge contribution in middlesborough's comfortable position in the table. I'm assuming you chose Santa Cruz as the signing of the season because of the price tag? because surely few players have lit up the premiership in their debut season as much as fernando torres? he has been class. I'd agree with you about the point you made of jose mourinho. he took chelsea to the top (aided with a few quid) but abramovic clearly wasnt happy about the fact that his club was hated by everyone, not out of respect, but more out of a lack of respect. he gave chelsea the heel status. man utd have always been a hated team, but that was purely out of of respect for their success. nobodt agreed with the way mourinho went about his job. "win at all costs" is not a respectful way to win the league.

Ashley Young should figure somewhere. He has been been consistently exceptional.

Kranjcar?!?! Apart from his goal against England he he done anything? Ashley Young has had a far better season as has Hleb
Posted 14:10 29th April 2008
William Jeffery (Liverpool fan) says...
Why is Rio in everyone's team of the year. Only looks good because Vidic next to him is world class. Put a premiership standard defender in alongside him (Brown) and Utd look dodgy. Its no coincidence. Vidic is the best CD in the prem at the moment but i can name at least 3 that have better seasons than Rio. Dunne has been exceptional, Carvalho is a rock and Woodgate earned himself a move that he was due. Why cant the critics look past the name and the price and see him for the player he is? How Kranjcar has had a better season than Ashley Young will have to be better explained than "had an impressive season" for anything to stick

Paul Camilleri (Newcastle United fan) says...
Mostly agree with your seasons picks, although I'd have picked Eduado as the low point myself. The only thing I'd really like to call you on though is the left back; Evra is the best left back in the world right now and has been the model of consistancy throughout the season. ...and all those having a pop about you're pre-season picks are using just the ever reliable device of hindsight.

Shocking selections! Mourinho's exit, a highlight? Haha. Is a player a flop if he can't get in a team ahead of carvalho and terry? What about totenham's 6-4 win over reading or chelsea's 4-4 draw with Aston Villa. There is no doubting that mourinho was a great manager. Never read so much rubbish in my life.

I have noticed that many of the experts had chosen van Persie to be their player of the year at pre-season. Is he really that good and unlucky? Why did you choose him?
