SYLVAIN DISTIN'S proposed permanent move to Newcatsle United could yet be in doubt as reports continue to suggest he will move to Greek side Olympiakos instead.

The French defender is on loan at St James Park from Le Championnat side Paris Saint Germain and has performed well for Bobby Robson's side, adding presence and aerial ability to the defence, although he has been prone to the odd error and his marking has been suspect.

Robson has said that he is keen to seal his permanent switch to the North East when his loan spell expires at the end of the season but this could yet fall through.

It is still unclear if The Magpies are willing to meet PSG's asking price of around ‚é¼5 million (£3m), and the Greek outfit could sneak in with a ‚é¼5.4 million bid to take him to Athens instead.

Paris boss Luis Fernandez has also said that Distin would be welcome back at the Parc des Princes should his move to Newcastle fall through, meaning Robson must persuade the club to part with the cash to seal the deal.

The Toon Army would be gutted to lose out on Distin after he has performed so well in front of them but Olympiakos are ready to pounce, especially as Lille coach Vahid Halilhodzic looks set to take over at the club in the summer and the French defender would have been recommended by him.
