Gerrard: Backing Riise
Steven Gerrard has insisted that John Arne Riise will not be singled out for criticism following the 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
Dirk Kuyt put Liverpool ahead in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at Anfield, before Riise scored an own goal deep into stoppage time to leave the advantage with Chelsea.
The Norwegian full-back, who only came on as a substitute for the final half hour, could have cleared a Salomon Kalou cross with his right foot but instead opted to try and use his head.
Gerrard has admitted that the result was disappointing but has given his backing to his team-mate of seven years.
"He's been here a long time and he's a good boy so now we will support him," Gerrard told Dagbladet.no.
"We have to get his head right because we win and lose as a team. It's not about singling out players."
Alvaro Arbeloa has echoed Gerrard's sentiment and stressed that Liverpool will stand by Riise.
"John is very, very disappointed and we will support him."
