It was mind blowing, but I missed an absolute sitter and if I don't play again and score it will just torture me forever.

Jon McClure told Soccer AM why Sheffield should be one of the host venues for the 2018 World Cup, providing England win the bid.

The Reverend and The Makers front man has backed Sheffield Wednesday's plans to increase the capacity of Hillsborough to 45,000 and he had a message for Fifa president Sepp Blatter.

He said: "Listen Sepp! We need the World Cup in Sheffield because it's an amazing place with dead friendly people."

"The other thing is Wednesday and Sheffield United are together when it comes to the World Cup bid. There are also 219 languages spoken in Sheffield, so every game would be a home game!

"Plus there's an excellent tram service and we're used to hosting your big world sporting events like the snooker... what else do you want to know!?"

Owls

The huge Owls fan wasn't as upbeat about his side's chances this season however. After a disappointing start to the campaign, Wednesday currently find themselves in 14th in the Championship table.

However, he admitted he couldn't be happier at being two places above City rivals United.

"I've only been to one game this season at that was at home to Middlesbrough and they weren't pretty, but we'll turn it around," he told Helen and Max.

"It's a bit gutting when you've been used to better things, especially in the early '90s when we had a good team and they played good football as well, so it's a bit of body blow to be scraping it in the Championship."

So would simply finishing above their bitter rivals in the league be deemed as a good season in his eyes, asked Helen:

"That would be a terrific season!" He said.

Heroes

Finishing above United is no doubt top of his Christmas list, and he was thanking Santa Claus earlier this season when he turned out at Hillsborough alongside some of his heroes.

McClure, who considers himself a "useful" player in the mould of a "young Carsten Jancker", admitted he was in awe of some of the players, but was keen to get another game after fluffing his lines.

"It was mind blowing, but I missed an absolute sitter and if I don't play again and score it will just torture me forever," he said.

"John Sheridan was there and he's an absolute geezer, so I was made up to be able to play with him. He never used to move when he was playing anyway, but he just sat in the centre circle spraying these 60-yard passes around."
