Castleford coach Terry Matterson has praised his side for coming through testing conditions to triumph 18-12 at Salford on Friday night.

Converted tries for Brett Ferres, Michael Shenton and Kirk Netherton proved sufficient for the Tigers.

And, despite seeing Dean McGilvray and Stefan Ratchford scores give the hosts late hope, Castleford held on for their eighth win from 10 away from home this season.

Matterson said afterwards: "I thought it was a pretty professional performance from our guys in really tough conditions against a very committed Salford side.

"We had control for the vast majority of the game. I'm very pleased to come here and get a win considering the way they have been going.

"We'd like to make our results a little better at home, but where we are at this stage of the season, we're doing okay.

"We'll take points wherever, as I say they're both worth two points but we got really stuck in today and earned everything we got and I really thought we were the better side."

Acceptance

Salford coach Shaun McRae - Super League's longest-serving head coach who took charge of his 400th club game on Friday night - admitted his side were second best.

"I thought we played okay but we turned over too much ball, although I thought we defended particularly well," he said.

"We didn't handle a couple of their kicks in the first half but I might actually give more credit to Cas than lack of effort from our guys.

"Cas were better than us, strong defensively and they just shaded us. They deserved to win the match.

"It was a fairly tight game. I thought we might have learnt a little bit from last week because we played in similar conditions down in Bridgend against Celtic Crusaders. But we didn't learn those lessons I'm afraid."
