As the last of the Euro 2008 quarter-finals arrives, focus remains upon matters back home and over the past few days an Englandwatch blast from the past has been necessary.

Our showbiz Premier League stars have turned their backs on the likes of Bridlington, Western Super Mare and Bognor Regis in favour of Miami, Puerto Banus and Ibiza - shame on them - but we remain loyal to England's fair shores.

Wayne and Coleen shunned a Merseyside marriage for a glitzy Italian wedding to earn almost as much gossip as red top column inches, but it is impossible to ignore the fact that Mr and Mrs Rooney continue to dominate.

This time they are aided and abetted by Wayne's Manchester United colleague Rio Ferdinand as they crash the front pages and storm clouds gather over Old Trafford following a ceremony snub.

The People reports that the Rooneys are outraged that Ferdinand 'mysteriously' gave their Portofino date the elbow after a car despatched for airport delivery duty returned empty-handed.

Friendship

However, we are eager for our domestic aces to remain muckers and would like to remind the Rooneys that Ferdinand - who was banned for eight months in 2004 for forgetting to attend a drugs test - is perhaps not blessed with the best memory.

But here at Englandwatch we feel loyalty to Queen and country comes before friendship and, therefore, let the reminiscing of the days of European Championship qualification begin as it is shown that you do not have to jet off to a foreign land for a taste of glamour as Teddy Sheringham is rumoured to be set for an appearance in the next series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Sheringham was not the quickest on the field, but he was as English as Fish and Chips and, as the cliche goes, he always played the first few yards in his head to impress United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. Let's hope the same applies if and when it comes to catching the eye of Brucie and the gang with a toe-tapping Paso Doble. Boom boom.

Finally, to add to the feeling of nostalgia, we delve into the back catalogue of the Football Association's managerial appointments to see that Sven Goran Eriksson is settling down in Mexico City as he prepares for his latest international job.

With fellow ex-England boss and new FC Twente manager Steve McClaren plumping for a move to Holland, the Daily Star on Sunday claims soon-to-be Mexico chief Eriksson has opted for a luxury penthouse equipped with its own helipad (insert joke here about a possible fake sheikh-enforced quick escape).
