Hampshire made Sussex bat again but after being skittled for 179 on the final day the hosts were set just 11 to take the points.

Ollie Raynor completed a maiden five-wicket haul with the scalp of Dimitri Mascarenhas, caught at short leg to wrap up the innings after the visitors had hung on for 73 minutes, adding a further 52 to their overnight 127-7.

Nic Pothas reached 44 before chasing a wide delivery from Corey Collymore with Matt Prior taking a good catch.

The West Indian claimed his second wicket of the innings when David Balcombe edged to slip, but not before the tail-ender ensured Sussex would need to bat again.

But they needed just seven balls to claim only their fifth victory in all forms of the game this season, and their first without the assistance of an overseas players player in eight years.

Day Three

Ollie Rayner claimed 4-49 to help push Sussex to the brink of victory over Hampshire in the battle of the bottom two in Division One.

The off-spinner's championship-best figures left the visitors on 127-7 in their second innings at the close of day three at Arundel.

Resuming in the morning already in trouble on 131-5 in their first innings, Hampshire came close to avoiding the follow on, falling just 20 runs short.

score for three years, but Corey Collymore took four wickets as Sussex bowled their opponents out for 257.

Hampshire struggled second time around, losing five wickets for just 26 in the space of eight overs as Raynor ripped through their batting order.

They are still 42 behind going into the final day and look set to remain rooted to the foot of the table with just one win to their name.

Day Two

Defending champions Sussex have left Hampshire struggling to avoid the follow-on on day two of their County Championship match at Arundel Castle.

On a day interrupted by rain, Murray Goodwin resumed on 116 for Sussex and went on to lodge a marathon 184 from 336 balls before becoming the maiden first-class victim of left-arm spinner Liam Dawson.

His innings ensured maximum batting points for Sussex and he also dominated a ninth-wicket stand of 74 in 19 overs with Corey Collymore (20).

Sussex lost three wickets in the first hour with left-armer James Tomlinson removing Robin Martin-Jenkins and Ollie Rayner in successive overs on the way to taking 5-108.

They really seized control of the match, however, when both Hampshire's openers, Michael Brown and Michael Carberry, fell with only 14 on the board.

Michael Lumb soon departed before off-spinner Rayner removed the important wickets of Sean Ervine and John Crawley (70) as Hampshire lost half their side for 105.

Crawley batted attractively to complete his half-century from 59 balls with 10 fours but, on 70 he prodded at a ball of extra bounce from Rayner and Chris Adams held onto the catch at slip.

Day One

Sussex had two century-makers on the opening day of their match against Hampshire at Arundel, with Carl Hopkinson hitting his maiden first-class ton and Murray Goddwin also reaching three figures.

The home side won the toss and Chris Adams opted to make first use of the Arundel pitch against bottom Division One's bottom side Hampshire - and they eventually obliged by posting 316-5 by the close despite a shocking start.

Adams himself did not get into the action as he was trapped lbw for a first-ball duck by James Tomlinson - as was Matt Prior although he at least managed to last two balls.

When Prior went Sussex were struggling at 25-4, but Hopkinson and Goodwin embarked on a match-changing fifth-wicket stand of 194 before he became Tomlinson's third wicket.

Hopkinson got away with being dropped on 32 by John Crawley to go on and score his maiden first-class century off 177 balls with 14 fours and two sixes, one of which took him into three figures.

Goodwin, in contrast, now has 36 centuries for Sussex as he made it to 155 not out by the close after adding 97 for the sixth wicket with Robin Martin-Jenkins who closed on 59.
