Jimmy Anderson pressed his claims for a place in the England side for the first Test against New Zealand with a five wicket haul as Lancashire skittled Durham for 90 on day three.

Resuming on 28-3 and with little hope of winning the match, Durham added 19 to the score before Anderson broke through, removing night-watchman Mark Davies (lbw) and Garry Park (caught behind) in quick succession.

Andrew Flintoff, denied a wicket when Anderson dropped Davies at slip, sent down five wicketless overs before Lancashire struck again, Mark Chilton running out Michael Di Venuto with a direct hit after he called for an ambitious single.

Anderson then had Phil Mustard caught high at second slip before Ben Harmison provided wicket-keeper Luke Sutton with his fifth victim of the innings.

Sajid Mahmood got in on the act when trapping Mitch Claydon lbw and then caught Steve Harmison at mid-off to give Anderson his fifth wicket and round off a 232 win with over five sessions to spare.

Day Two

Andrew Flintoff once again failed with the bat but starred with the ball as Lancashire moved into a dominant position against Durham.

Flintoff was bowled for a five-ball duck by Garry Park (2-20) to go with his first-ball effort in the first innings.

But Lancashire opener Paul Horton's 108 led the hosts to 293 in their second innings and left Durham chasing 323 for victory.

That looks unlikely after Flintoff roared in with the new ball to reduce the visitors to 28-3 by the close of the second day.

Michael Stoneman (0), Kyle Coetzer (0) and Paul Collingwood (1) were all caught behind during Flintoff's devastating six-over spell of 3-7.

Day one

England bowlers Jimmy Anderson and Andrew Flintoff got Lancashire back into the contest after the hosts' batsmen had flopped miserably against Durham on day one at Old Trafford.

Durham's Mark Davies took 7-33 as Lancashire were skittled out for just 143, after Stuart Law had won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good pitch and in batsmen-friendly sunshine.

But Lancashire had already struggled to 93-3 when four wickets fell without a run being added, including that of Flintoff, who was out for a duck, caught by England teammate Paul Collingwood off Davies.

Lancashire had fast bowler Sajid Mahmood to thank for gaining at least a degree of respectability as the number nine made 31 from 41 deliveries.

But Anderson and Flintoff both took four wickets - Anderson at the top of the order, Flintoff mopping up the tail - as Durham were skittled out for just 114, a deficit of 29.

Anderson removed Mark Stoneman, stand-in skipper Michael Di Venuto, Paul Collingwood and Phil Mustard.

Flintoff continued his good work with the ball to return two spells. His first was a seven over burst of one for 19.

He had Kyle Coetzer caught by Loye in the slips after the 24 year-old batsman fending a short ball straight up in the air.

And then he returned late in the day to comprehensively remove the Harmison brothers and then top scorer Mitch Claydon for 40.

Ben was castled with the middle stump out of the ground, Steve caught behind and Claydon bowled.

Durham's number nine also starred with the bat, Claydon's bristling 40 coming from just 38 balls with seven fours.
