Hoggard: Out of Roses match
Yorkshire face a bowling crisis ahead of their LV County Championship Division One clash with Lancashire.
England paceman Matthew Hoggard is amongst the list of absentees from the Roses clash with a broken thumb while Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Deon Kruis and Ajmal Shahzad are all carrying hamstring injuries.
Darren Gough takes over the captaincy from Anthony McGrath after being rested in the White Rose's previous championship outing against Surrey.
Gough and one of Richard Pyrah, David Wainwright and Ben Sanderson are set to replace Naved and Kruis in the side that drew at the Brit Oval.
Despite having a weakened attack the hosts head into the game with the psychological edge after bowling Lancashire out for 89, Gough taking 3-17, in Wednesday's Friends Provident Trophy encounter that was eventually called off due to wet weather.
Seamer Patterson opened the bowling during the limited overs success but is not ready for a first-class return following a knee injury that required an operation in mid-April.
England captain Michael Vaughan is unavailable while fellow batsman Chris Taylor is still nursing a calf injury and misses out on the 13-man squad.
Dominic Cork is back in the Lancashire squad, and his competitiveness will be a big bonus for the tough Roses battle.
Cork had been missing with a back injury he picked up in the championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Captain Stuart Law broke an index finger on his right hand which ruled him out of the FP Trophy match between the two and he will also sit out the crunch County Championship version with the problem.
Lancashire wicketkeeper Luke Sutton will again deputise for the regular skipper.
22-year-old spinner Stephen Parry could be in line for a fiery championship debut after impressing for the Lancashire second XI.
